1. Who we are
Own This Day is a digital service that lets people claim a calendar date and create a public page associated with it.
Own This Day is the data controller for personal information handled directly through the service.
For privacy questions or requests, contact [email protected].
2. Information we collect
When you claim a date, we may collect:
- Your name or chosen display name.
- Your email address.
- The message you submit for your date.
- An image you choose to upload.
- An optional website or social link.
- Your selected calendar date.
- Payment and transaction identifiers provided by our payment provider.
- Technical information required to operate, protect and troubleshoot the service.
We do not receive or store your full payment card details. Payment information is handled by Stripe.
3. Public and private information
Your display name, message, uploaded image, chosen date and optional link are intended to appear publicly on your claimed date page.
Your email address is not displayed publicly and is used for administration of your claim, support and important service-related communication.
4. Why we use your information
We process personal information where necessary to provide the service you requested, including reserving your date, processing your claim and displaying your date page.
We may also process information where necessary for our legitimate interests in operating, securing, maintaining and improving Own This Day, preventing fraud and abuse, and resolving technical or customer-support issues.
We may retain or process information where necessary to comply with legal, accounting, tax or regulatory obligations.
We use Cloudflare Turnstile to help protect the claim process from bots, automated abuse and fraudulent activity. Turnstile performs security checks using technical information about the visitor and browser environment. It does not receive the content entered into the claim form.
5. Payments
Payments are handled through Stripe Managed Payments. Stripe processes information required to complete the transaction, prevent fraud, handle payment disputes and fulfil its own legal and regulatory obligations.
We receive transaction information such as payment status, amount, currency and Stripe transaction identifiers so that we can activate and administer your claim.
6. Images and file storage
Images uploaded before payment are temporarily stored privately while your date is reserved.
Once a claim is successfully paid, its image is moved to public storage so that it can be displayed on the public date page.
Images associated with abandoned or unsuccessful claims may be retained temporarily before being deleted.
Before content is published, we may use automated moderation services to assess public-facing text, links and uploaded images for prohibited, harmful or unsafe content. We currently use Sightengine for this purpose.
We do not send your purchaser email address to Sightengine for content moderation.
7. Analytics
We use limited analytics to understand how Own This Day is used, identify problems and improve the service.
Cloudflare Web Analytics provides aggregate website traffic and performance information.
We also use PostHog for server-side product analytics relating to the claim and checkout process. These events may include an internal claim identifier, the selected date, whether optional features such as an image or link were used, and transaction information such as amount and currency.
We do not send your name, email address, message, uploaded image or the contents of your optional link to PostHog. We do not currently use PostHog session recording, browser autocapture or browser-based visitor tracking.
8. Who we share information with
We use trusted service providers where necessary to operate Own This Day. These currently include:
- Stripe for payments and transaction processing.
- Cloudflare for website security, bot and abuse prevention through Turnstile, and image storage and delivery.
- Neon for database hosting.
- PostHog for limited server-side product analytics.
- Hosting and infrastructure providers used to operate the website.
- Sightengine for automated moderation of submitted public-facing text, links and images.
We may also disclose information where required by law, to protect our legal rights or to prevent fraud, abuse or security threats.
We do not sell your personal information.
9. International processing
Some of the companies that help us operate the service may process information outside the United Kingdom.
Where data protection law requires safeguards for an international transfer, we rely on the safeguards used by those providers or other legally recognised transfer mechanisms.
Our PostHog analytics project is currently hosted in the United States, so limited analytics information may be processed there.
10. How long we keep information
Information forming part of a successful public date claim is normally kept for as long as that claim remains available through Own This Day.
Transaction and administrative records may be retained for longer where reasonably necessary for accounting, tax, disputes, fraud prevention or other legal obligations.
Information from abandoned or unsuccessful claims is kept only for as long as reasonably necessary to manage reservations, troubleshoot problems, prevent abuse and clean up incomplete claims.
11. Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, UK data protection law may give you rights relating to your personal information, including the right to:
- Ask for a copy of information we hold about you.
- Ask us to correct inaccurate information.
- Ask us to delete certain information.
- Ask us to restrict certain processing.
- Object to certain uses of your information.
- Receive certain information in a portable format where the right to data portability applies.
These rights are not absolute and may depend on why the information is being processed.
To make a request, email [email protected].
12. Complaints
If you have concerns about how your personal information is handled, please contact us first so that we can try to resolve them.
You also have the right to raise a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

We may update this privacy notice as Own This Day changes. The date at the top of the page shows when it was last updated.
If we introduce a materially different use of personal information, we will update this notice before that processing begins where required.
